Focus on employee well-being to drive business results

There is no denying the close connection between employee health and an organization’s performance. Studies show that businesses that prioritize a healthy workplace and focus on employee health and well-being enjoy increased profitability and productivity. What’s more, estimates suggest that illness-related productivity losses now cost U.S. employers approximately $530 billion every year.

A newly released e-book from Telus Health entitled “The interdependence of employee well-being and organizational health,” outlines three key elements of employee health and how they impact an organization’s overall performance.

Physical health

Employees who are physically healthy take less sick days, require less healthcare expenses and are more productive. Organizations can support their employees’ physical health by providing by both in-person and virtual access to primary care physicians and specialists such as nutritionists. Offering formal programs and wellness challenges and allowing employees flexibility to ensure they can exercise are also ways to improve physical health.

Mental health

Poor mental health can severely impact an individual’s energy levels, motivation and sleep and can increase the likelihood of developing other diseases and lead to unhealthy habits that promote short-term relief over long-term well-being. According to the Canadian Psychological Association, businesses with a comprehensive mental health strategy tend to have stronger organizational performance and higher employee engagement. Aspects of mental health strategies can include stress management webinars, workplace cognitive behavioural therapy and benefit plans that include access to mental health professionals.

Financial health

Greater financial security leads to greater levels of employee engagement while employees with financial stress report poor overall health at twice the rate of those without financial stress. Financial stress also has a direct impact on both physical and mental stress. Higher salaries are not the only way to improve an organization’s financial health. Enhanced health benefits and offering group retirement savings plans are other ways to support employees.

Consideration of all three aspects of employee health are key to creating an engaged and productive team. Wondering if your benefits plan and health offerings are moving your organization in the right direction? Contact us today for a complimentary review of your group benefits plan.
